I wrote Wildcat’s Last Waltz pretty much in one sitting. It was inspired by long conversations with my Grandma shortly after the death of my Grandad, and not that many years after the death of my Mum. On drives to and from the garden centre we would share stories of her past and our joint feelings of loneliness. It struck me that although there’s 60 years between me and her, the feelings of love and loss were the same, and that led to me writing this play about her life and what is more gave me the idea that I would play her.
I gave the play to Kelly Hunter who offered to direct it and thanks to her the play has taken on a life I couldn’t even imagine when writing. The show is a unique piece of theatre that manages to blend outrageous drag comedy with a truthful and heart-breaking exploration of ageing and loneliness- it truly is wild.
